Residence in the Dominican
Republic
The Dominican Republic offers two types of
residence. The first is provisional residence which is granted first.
After one year of provisional residence, you may apply for permanent
residence.
You will need to plan on making at least two trips to Santo Domingo in order
to start the process. The first will be to take the medical test and make
the application, while the second visit will be after your residence is
approved, to obtain the residence card and cedula. One working day in Santo
Domingo is sufficient for each visit. Our representatives will be on hand to
advise and assist you, translate if necessary, and accompany you to the
immigration office.
To make sure everything runs smoothly, please be sure to send your documents
to us by courier first, and plan your trip several weeks in advance. It's
important to note that Immigration now requires birth certificates to be
translated and legalized, which is best carried out at Dominican consulates
abroad in advance of your visit.
To apply for residence you should contact us first,
and prepare to send to us in advance by courier:
-
Birth certificate
-
Marriage and Divorce certificates (if
applicable)
-
Copy of passport
If you can easily obtain a police report from
your home country this will be useful, but it is not obligatory as we can
also use a Dominican police report. This is likely to change in the future.
The rest of the requirements can be completed by our office while you are in
the Dominican Republic. This list includes:
-
Letter of request
-
Duly completed Form 509-Ref.
-
Letter of guarantee from a Dominican citizen
or company.
-
Police Record
-
Health certificate, including HIV test and
chest x-ray. (This process is carried out by government doctors in the
immigration office in Santo Domingo. A fee is charged)
-
Work contract, bank statement or other proof
of funds (the minimum amount requested is not mandated, but in the
region of US$ 10,000 is recommended)
-
Seven frontal photos 2" x 2" and three side
photos.
-
Passport photocopies.
-
Certification from the General Immigration
Office of the applicant's last date of entry in the country.
